Ebook About
A groundbreaking look at the lives of George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, the most consequential father-son pair in American history, often in their own words. In this revealing, often poignant work, presidential historian Mark K. Updegrove tracks the two Bush presidents from their formative years through their post-presidencies and the failed presidential candidacy of Jeb Bush, derailing the Bush presidential dynasty. Drawing extensively on exclusive access and interviews with both Bush presidents, Updegrove reveals for the first time their influences and perspectives on each other’s presidencies; their views on family, public service, and America’s role in the world; and their unvarnished thoughts on Donald Trump and the radical transformation of the Republican Party he now leads. In 2016 George W. Bush lamented privately that he might be “the last Republican president.” Donald Trump’s election marked the end not only to the Bushes’ hold on the White House, but of a rejection of the Republican principles of civility and international engagement and leadership that the Bushes have long championed. The Last Republicans offers illuminating, moving portraits of the forty-first and forty-third presidents, as well as an elegy for the Republican “establishment,” which once stood for putting the interests of the nation over those of any single man.

Book The Last Republicans: Inside the Extraordinary Relationship Between George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush Review :

Not what I thought the book was going to be about but a very good read nonetheless. First, this isn't a political book. This book chronicles the Bush political dynasty with an emphasis on the relationship between "41 and 43". I have to admit that I had little notion of what that relationship was other than the movie "W". This book contradicts almost all of the movie and depicts the relationship of a father and son as one of deep affection and admiration. While the politics of the two men were very different (IMO 41 being cut more of the Eisenhower mold, while 43 was clearly more of the Regan template) they both served their country with dignity and best intentions (for the record I am not trying to be an apologist for 43 in particular in his decision to invade Iraq). The title of the book stems from a comment made by 43 that he feared (that in the era of Trump) he might be the last Republican president. As someone who voted for both Presidents Bush (but not Trump), I appreciate his concern.
I voted for George H.W. Bush twice for president; for George “W” Bush twice for president; and for Jeb Bush for Governor of Florida. My votes for “W” and Jeb were enthusiastic. My votes for George H.W. Bush were reluctant. That’s the background of mixed, but mainly positive feelings for the Bushes, that I approached the book. But rather than review the Bushes, let me review the book based on its marketing blurb:=====In this endearing, illuminating work, presidential historian Mark K. Updegrove tracks the two Bush presidents from their formative years through their post-presidencies and the failed presidential candidacy of Jeb Bush, derailing the Bush presidential dynasty. In 2016 George W. Bush lamented privately that he might be “the last Republican president.” Donald Trump’s election marked the end not only to the Bushes’ hold on the White House, but of a rejection of the Republican principles of civility and international engagement and leadership that the Bushes have long championed. The Last Republicans offers revealing and often moving portraits of the forty-first and forty-third presidents, as well as an elegy for the Republican “establishment,” which once stood for putting the interests of the nation over those of any single man.=====Is this really “an endearing, illuminating work?”No, there is very little new here that a person who has kept up with the news since the 1980s does not already know. Nor is it an “elegy for the Republican Establishment.” It is about the Bushes and nothing more than that. Nor does it provide any profound political insights. The Bushes are annoyed that Trump prevailed over Jeb. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! However, when it comes to knowing who the Bushes are as people, the book shines. My favorite part of the book was the story of how George H.W. Bush and Barbara migrated away from his posh and aristocratic Connecticut home and struck out for the arid backwater of Odessa, Texas in 1948. Against all odds, they loved it out there, and were adored by the Texans. Everything George H.W. Bush and his children have since accomplished comes from taking that wonderfully risky fork in his life path at age 24.The book explores the fulfilling life George H.W. Bush, “W” Bush, and Jeb Bush made for themselves in part through patrician family connections Back East, but mainly through sheer hard work, a talent for business management, and the ability to get along with people from all walks of life. I thought George H.W. Bush was a robotic and less-than-popular President, but in person he appears to have been warm and engaging. The book is worth a read just to get a glimpse of that side of George H.W. Bush that the public never saw.Other poignant points are how George H.W. Bush’s family dealt with the loss of their four-year-old baby girl to leukemia. There is also the story of George W. Bush’s resolve at 40 to quit drinking and lever his life up onto a higher plane. I also enjoyed the brief story of how he put together the deal to acquire the Texas Rangers and then help turn them from losers to winners. In rating the book three stars I am not at all denigrating author Mark K. Upderove. He has written a very readable book that brings us a deeper connection to the private lives of family whose public service we knew well from their decades in public life. It is a good story of exemplary family men and women, noble in public service, and scandal-free in private life. Unlike other authors, Updegrove neither exaggerates the Bushes’ accomplishments or denigrates them. It’s a matter-of-fact telling of their life stories without embellishment. The three-star rating is more a rating of the book’s marketing blurb which promises more political insights than it delivers. The book delivers insights into the Bushes’ personal lives, but not much of anything new in the way of political insights. It's been nearly 25 years since George H.W. Bush left office and 9 years since "W" Bush left. Numerous other books have already covered most all the ground this book covers. If you haven’t read any other books about George H.W. Bush's or “W” Bush’s presidencies, you will probably enjoy this book and learn from it.After reading the book I’d say the same thing about the Bushes I’d say about any family that I knew by reputation to be morally upstanding and accomplished in many walks of life: “They’re good people.” This book explains the Bushes as what they are --- decent people who were very successful in business, arguably successful in politics, and who moved the country modestly forward in the right direction as presidents.
